This programme aims to raise the awareness and aspirations of those who are open to the possibility of taking on a Head of Institution role at some point in the future and to offer development of knowledge in key areas to help participants prepare for the role and its associated responsibilities.  The programme contributes to the University’s commitment to ensuring a steady, competent through flow of individuals who are able to take on increasingly senior leadership roles across the University.

See our Leadership Development Framework which contextualises where the SLP Level 1 fits within the continuum of leadership development provision offered by the University.

The programme currently consists of the following areas:

  • Understanding leadership in the context of an academic department or institution
  • Leadership theories and their application in practice
  • Personal leadership style
  • Engaging others and building relationships
  • Dealing with challenging people situations
  • Leading in an environment of change

The programme comprises 4 sessions (2-3 hours each) over a 2 month period, and includes a mix of briefings from key speakers (including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional and International Relations), and workshop activities to develop knowledge in key areas and offering peer networking opportunities.

Nomination to this programme is sought in December each year via School Secretaries in liaison with Heads of Institution and Heads of School.
